Aged Cedar - Proper Prep Prior to Coating Application

ColorScapes Painting is thorough and meticulous
with surface preparation prior to deck coating application.
We are somewhat taken aback when we learn that other
painting firms shy away from quoting the necessary
sanding work that must be done prior to successful
deck coating system application.

Again, 95% of the job is the prep work. skip this
step and the results will not be what you hope for.

Deck coatings must "lay down" into freshly sanded
cedar fibre and not "float" on an aged slurry layer
of dead wood cells.

Start with at bare minimum 36-50 Grit Pad and finish with
120 and the surface will accept coatings beautifully, last three
times as long and be much easier for maintenance coating
in the future.

Decks that require significant sanding and prep work
are quoted at 4.75 to 5.00 per sq/ft2 and this includes
all product for application. Not cheap obviously, but we
guarantee our application and are cheaper than standard
carpet installation prices. 600 sq ft of deck takes 18-22hrs
of hand sanding alone to get to that fresh new cedar appearance
and it cannot be done with a vibrating mat sander - it has to be
done by hand belt sanders.

Special thanks to Arlene for this project and Janice on the assist ;)

Deck Season Begins May 15th

Deck coating application season begins May 15th
for all work quoted by ColorScapes.

Have a look at the one we did last year with Sikkens
SRD and Rubbol (pergola) - this shot was taken 1 week
ago, and it looks like it was coated yesterday ;)

Surface preparation is 95% of any deck application, the goal
being to avoid high moisture content, avoid pressure washing
cedar or softwoods, and make sure to profile sand prior
to application. The worst deck failures we have seen in the field
are when customers have done one of the following:

1. Avoided sanding
2. Overapplied product - film mils are too high, coating delaminates over time.
3. Inappropriate surface conditions - wood too wet, too dirty/moldy/fungus etc.
4. Poor product choice - wrong coating for traffic needs.
5. Applying coating over previously failed coatings.

Sometimes, you see a project where all of the above has occured
and the only solution is to strip, resand and vacuum, do moisture
testing and then reapply new coating system in accordance with
manufacturer's directions.

Modernizing Kitchen Update

Currently assisting a client by upgrading cabinets
to a Satin Black from existing Golden Oak Colour and
adding Colonial Wainscot (1 3/4" face detail)
boxes as well as microwave over range installation.

Notice on the above range install that OBC code requires
a surface mounted/grounded 3 receptacle outlet for
the microwave/fan combo. We then installed a hard
5/8" panel to take the new weight of the microwave
instead of relying on cheesy toggle/butterfly bolts. With
6 3" zircons, this can now take about 4ooo lbs dead weight before
breaking ;)

We custom sized the microwave install for someone a little
less tall than the standard 24" above range for ease of use.

Pictures to follow once complete - special thanks
to Craig and Sasha for the chance to work on this
fine home ;)

Cabinets require oscillation sanding to profile,
detail sanding, removal of hinge and hardware
and HVLP application of both primer and paint
for a maximum dft (dry film thickness) of 8-9 mils
to avoid cold or hot check down the line.

Sasha mentioned replacing all cabinets would have
run northward of 2K, we painted them for less than
750.00 complete and they look brand new !!!

Kitchen Renewal

We are currently completing a kitchen in the North Etobicoke
area which posed a few simple challenges. The existing finish
on the walls and baseboards were aged alkyd/oil - which required
scuff sanding and priming with 1-2-3 to convert the wall system
to zero VOC latex.

Once again, Zinsser 1-2-3 has answered the bell. Ceilings and walls
were airless sprayed at 1800 psi with a 217 tip and came up perfect
for the rolled on topcoat - CIL's Mystical. Baseboards done with
CIL Realife Semi Gloss Trim Finish mixed to Ben Moore's ever
popular "Cloud White -967".

Ceiling done with Moorestyle Washable Flat Acrylic.

Pics to follow once complete.

Special thanks to Gail D ;)

ColorScapes Painting Adheres to PDCA Standards

ColorScapes Painting has extensive experience in all facets
of both home and commercial painting standards of quality
and performance. In actual fact, this training is what enables
us to extend 5 year warranty on all work performed indoor
and out. We do not cut corners, skimp on product or minimize
surface prep, we are a painting firm that is a big believer in
spending additional time on surface prep to ensure a long-lasting
and pleasing result ! We are also a charter member of PDCA America.

That being said, there are times when we see a door or window trim
that is badly deteriorated and no amount of prep work or painting
is going to fix it and make it look new - in this case we will suggest
replacing the trim or offending object (complete door set etc) if budget
permits ;)

Condominium Repaint - Silvan Forest

Client expressed a need to have not only repainting work
done and move towards a crisp colour set, but also to
have needed aesthetic repairs to drywall and ceiling.

Note the contrast from the old navy colour
to the rich jewel tone green (Ben Moore Brookside Moss)
and striking spicy mustard colour (Spicy Mustard Ben Moore).

The colours have definitely brightened and intensified the
wall appearance against the traditional Cloud White
Trim. If you look closely at the one photo you can see
the semi-gloss 100% acrylic sheen on the colonial 800
series doors. Cloud White is an excellent trim white
and has been a standard in fine homes across this region
for over 20 years.

We also did surface repairs to Colonial Doors that required
hardware removal with a Dremel tool and surface skim
with an epoxied wood fill.

Note our airless system placed in the hallway for multiple
colour changes quickly and the ability to go from room to
room quickly for faster application. The final room took
less than 7 minutes to paint all 4 walls !!! Try doing
that as a homeowner with your roller and brush we say !!!

Colours used (all Benjamin Moore Colours)

  • Brookside Moss
  • Vellum
  • Powell Buff
  • Spicy Mustard
  • Cloud White

Special thanks to Carl and Jane for this project.
