HVLP Spray Finishing in Shop

Here we are shooting WB lacquer on a small upper cabinet
door in CC-530 Brandon Beige over Akvasurf primer/surfacer.
Note we are using an HVLP gravity gun - lightweight, good at
angle spraying and very easy to clean and swap out for a new
colour.

Sandblasted and Installed Epoxy Floor

We assisted a client with a garage makeover in Carlisle
recently - here are the before and after pictures.

All epoxy floors are first pressure washed, etched then
sandlblasted to create an effective anchor profile
for the coating system to adhere to. Skip these
steps and it will peel like a bad sunburn in 60-90
days.

Installed epoxy floors are 2.00 per sq/ft2 complete !
We use Sherwin Williams' WaterBased Catalyzed
Epoxy and had it custom colorized to a Granite Grey
Colour.

Homeowner will add striping at a later date for
garage bins, bikes and other garage items once
coating system is cured completely.

As a bonus we skim coated the garage drywall
and sprayed up two coats of ProMar 200 Semi
Gloss White (B31 Series) to brighten the area up.

Great thanks to Jeff K. for the project !

Tips to Other Painters

If you are looking to build a solid revenue generating painting practice
you need the following core elements/strategy:

1. Ability to quote, complete and provide superior follow up skills
in both residential and light commercial work.
2. Skilled team support - hire painters who care about the quality of their work.
3. Ability to target tenders in OPBA, School Board, Daily Commercial News.
OACUHO (College and University Tenders), Municipal Tenders etc.
4. Relationship building skills, learn what the customers expect, set the
expectation bar properly and do not overpromise things that cannot be delivered.
5. Use the correct equipment for each project and make sure surface preparation is
the focus of the work. Do not rush the work !
6. Accept that your particular firm is better suited to certain projects and vice versa.
Do not attempt to quote multi-story commercial or large schoolboard work if you cannot
offer the necessary WSIB paperwork, manpower or skill set. We laugh our butts
off when we hear stories about architectural paint firms showing up to quote
tank farms and water tower projects which require Qp-2 certifications, blast
containment regulations and equipment costs that run into the high hundred thousands.
There are maybe only 10-15 firms in North America which specialize in this market
and have 30-40 years experience in industrial painting/field coatings practices. It is
a mistake to waste your time thinking you can bid this work without a portfolio of
     experience.
7. Be good at what you do, and learn every day. If you do not learn, you are bound
to repeat the same mistakes over and over again - create and refine your process, as it
is all about the process (take it from me - I am a certified ISO auditor for process !)

Hinge Options for Cabinet Mounting - Face Frame vs Surface Mount

We like to educate people about different hardware
for cabinet mounting as we have come across several
different scenarios in retrofit painting/lacquering.

Face frame reveals can be converted to a 105 degree
hidden or euro cup hinge with Blum hardware from
Rockler or Salice. There is also a more expensive
120 degree soft-close motion option from Salice.

All of them work well in hiding an old surface mount
bar or pin hinge which are common in pre 1980-90's
cabinetry.
