A current project underway is a complete cedar deck restoration.
While some homeowners like to blast away decks with
pressure washers, we think this is a bad idea for
cedar
as what you end up doing is lifting all kinds of wet cedar
fibre, injecting the lignin layers with way too much moisture
and now you have to wait 4 days to sand your deck.
We begin our deck restoration process with GreenSolv
biodegradable deck cleaner, which is agitated by
deck scrub brush and then hosed down and allowed
to dry overnight. Once dry, we begin the sanding process
and sometimes start with 36 and 40 grit sanding pads.
Our finish sanding is completed with 80 grit garnet then
power vacuumed prior to staining and finishing.
If your deck is severely weathered and requires sanding
make sure to clean and sand properly or your stain
will not lay down properly into the surface. We see
decks all the time that are just brutal - no sanding,
no cleaning, and the DIY'er has taken the lazy ass
route of going to the glory work early and expecting
the deck to look good for more than 1 season. If you
take the time to sand the deck properly before application,
you will begin to understand that us contractors actually
bust our asses trying to get the right level of surface prep
for a good job.
