The right way to refinish cabinetry every time...complete degloss and removal of existing KlearVar post-cat conversion finish prior to waterborne Akvasurf/Akvatopp topcoat factory finish.
All wood cabinetry coated in existing clear finish must be sanded back completely to new wood condition for successful long term performance and proper film build of new coating system....All of our work is done this way...we do not paint doors vertically on hinges like the shortcut takers with turbines...we don't expose homeowners to vinyl toluene BIN primers or substandard off-gassing conversion alkyds...all products are Greenguard and HAPS/formaldehyde free. We wouldn't have it any other way. Do NOT let any painter use oil based or vinyl toluene primers in your home, they off-gas 4-6lbs of harmful benzene hydrocarbon solvent, dangerous, flammable and gummy to the touch.
Any smart painter or finisher knows this stuff is bad to breathe in and will over the long term lead to a trip to the local tuberculosis clinic for early stage silicosis symptoms. I've seen 2 truck painters die
from breathing this garbage in (Holland Hitch and Truck Trailer) as a result of spraying qd enamels
and solvented epoxies. A 500,000 downdraft booth will not save you....
The sanding is necessary and also ensures removal of animal fat triglycerides found in soap, Mr.Clean, Lysol etc. Anyone spraying unsanded cabinetry will deal with fish-eye and lack of proper adhesion.
