Some Deck Work / Barrette Deco Panels
Some deck rehab work
using the new Barrette plastic
Deco Panels. These add a unique modern and different look as opposed to using the old
Chamfered balustrade pickets. You can also see more of the pool instead of a closed in look with balustrades.
We picked these up at Lowes, cut 2×2 lumber and inserted into a custom 1/4" wide and 3/4" deep routed channel, similar to inserting
a floating cabinet door panel. The trick to cutting these is to keep your table fence rigid and don't move it between cut setups, just like ripping 2.25 cabinet stiles/rails.
The nice thing is these can be removed for winter storage as they are suspended on a key hook hardware mount (Canadian Tire Hardware).

Last Open at the Abbey , DJ Prevails !
Well, for those of you that grew up going to Glen Abbey with our Dads and friends, today is the last hurrah for the course that the Golden Bear
Built. Apparently, he was so disgusted by the announcement to use the land to build more
McMansions, he refused to appear at the event.
The golf was excellent, the course was in excellent shape, and I know many fans who are sickened by this poor shortsighted decision to sell out to the almighty developer dollar.
The RCGA will regret this decision for the next 100 years. A sad day for Canadian golf fans for sure.

Strip and Refinish
Homeowner tried to use that Polyshades 2 in 1, which never really comes out that great, hence the call to us to strip and refinish by using a dedicated stain and separate clear finish to control color depth and final finish build.
Heirloom to the rescue, some lacquer thinner

Original raised panel

cabinetry, still in excellent

Doors stripped and profile
sanded using our Thoroughsand

Painting in Humidity, Exterior Notes
We try to counsel other painters
that exterior painting and refinishing
Can be a little tricky in our current
summer heatwave conditions.
It would be ideal if conditions were
always 72F with humidity below 35%,
and not 88-92F with 60% humidity.
As a general rule, follow the sun so that freshly
applied coatings do not get exposed to the blistering sun and try to make sure all surfaces
are thoroughly sanded and filled.
Also keep in mind that most exterior coatings
are sacrificial in nature and act to protect the
substrate. If left uncoated they will age
prematurely and decay.
Canadian Electrical Code 2018 Changes FYI
Effective as of April 2018, all kitchen
receptacles are required to be on a
dedicated branch line. GFCI outlets
mandatory near sink or wet areas.
Before you could add outlets from
another branch line, this is no longer
the case to meet CSA code.

Another Refinish Stage N Sell...this weekend Maryvale Ct, Burlington
This weekend another of our refinish assistance projects for the homeowner on Maryvale Ct. Burlington is on display. Listing is on rew.ca and Keller Williams.
Prior cabinets were aged maple but in great condition...OC-17 White Dove...finished in none
other than our go-to waterborne lacquer by AcromaPro.(50 Sheen). We use a Greenguard
GS-11 Rated Enviromentally Compliant Finish which is safe for homeowners to touch up and will not off-gas like a solvented mek cut lacquer.
Solvented finishes yellow early in off-whites and are more prone to interjunction rail and stile
cracking. Trust us, waterborne lacquers have been at the forefront of cabinet refinishing and their benefits far outweigh the use of old school MEK thinned solvented lacquers.
This was our 27th Dove White refinish !
Great thx to Royal City Paints for another
perfect tint !
Check with the MLS Board for listing details.
Great location, location, location !!! It won't be on the market for long, its a great home.
Once again great thx to Maureen and Peter :)

the Genius of Nikola Tesla...everything in construction angles is a 9
Did you know that Tesla's theorems of 3,6 and 9 are
astoundingly accurate in all fields of not only
geometry but also construction ?
The Angles of 45 degrees = 4 + 5 = 9
The Angle of 90 degrees is 9+ 0 = 9
Corner Angle Cabinetry is 22.5 , yes 2 + 2 +5=9
the inside crown reverse angle is 135, 1 +3 + 5 = 9
The inside of a hexagon angle is 108 degrees, 1 + 0 + 8 = 9
All construction cutting angles are defaulting to 9...
ALWAYS. For those of you doubting this magnificence
of resulting angles adding up to 9 here is an explanation...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inWnhZp_A-M
The problem ? If you buy an average built home, there isnt
a straight or perfect 90 degree inside corner to be found LOL !
Two weeks ago we had to cut 24 degree angles for corner cabinets
on a supposed 45 degree angle....just saying this is what goes on....
As refinish contractors we see all kinds of code violations on homes
where some of the original builder work in a tract survey is just
horrendous. There is a reason the OBC code book is growing by 90 pages
every 5 years...
Anything really easy is really not worth doing, challenge yourself !

Happy Homeowners with Maximum Resale !
We recently assisted a homeowner
With refinishing both kitchen and bath cabinetry in
Scholars Common Burlington,On.
16 months post finish, the owners received
a fantastic resale value in excess of 700k in less than 3 yrs of cosmetic upgrades !
The upgrades done are what we would call the Magic Five :
1. Refinishing the Kitchen to a Modern Clean White or Off White (shows better, larger, brighter !)
2. Upgrading to hardwood flooring over builder tile or cheapy 8mm floor
3. Eliminating clutter by getting a storage unit - unsightly clutter reduces showing potential
4. Upgraded vanities and bath fixtures
5. Fresh coats of current trend colour paints from Sherwin Williams, Ben Moore or PPG Dulux
Follow the above 5 core processes and you WILL GET MAXIMUM resale potential.
Its really not rocket science, but its difficult to do all of this and work a 50-60hr work week if
you are what we call corporately overemployed - ie. they will fire you if you don't put in
a 7-7 work day and get paid for 45. ! (Thanks Mike Harris)
Clients hire us to do cabinet refinishing and wall painting because they don't have the time, the tools and don't want the dust in their houses. !! You should see the look on their faces when they
make full bank on resale...it's highly rewarding to hear of cases where clients are making in excess of 200-300,000 in equity in 24-26 months. Refinishing a kitchen is just one more cornerstone in the build-up. Take a good look at those cabinet doors and bases, are they tired old grainy dinosaurs ?
The great thing ? Our refinish price was just
under $2200.00 and we gave the client a $250.00 Best Buy Gift card as thanks for the project
We also did valances and mini crown toppers in addition to a custom extended fridge box.
Refinishing is always win-win when staging to
sell your home for maximum resale.!
The job was completed Dec 2016 and is listed in our December archive of projects.
So happy for our repeat clients Tim and Luke !

Now Offering Shipped Cabinet Doors through Shipstation
We like to think that we are vanguard in our approach to servicing the refinished kitchen cabinet market.
Here's our latest offering for clients who
are a half days drive from us (250km or more).
Shipstation !!!
Pickups and deliveries arranged via the Shipstation service hub.
I keep telling those who will listen that we are only 125 years removed from covered wagons, there are thousands of ideas not yet conceived or put into practice yet that will form the foundation for the next 100 years. Driverless cars etc....the economy is rapidly evolving to a service and convenience based one with much less reliance on the Supermall approach of the 1980's.

Why Refinish ? Cover up mismatched joined grain !
Can you spot the mismatched grain
and unmatched stain sections ?
(Hint, its the last two really bad looking doors on the right upper cabinet section).
Sometimes little deficiencies like this drive homeowners nuts after a while of looking at it.
You'll also notice the base cabinet veneers
are too light and do not look even close to the hardwood maple doors on the uppers.
Another reason to refinish that kitchen,
Hide the faded Early American Stain
and dulled, mismatched grain areas
with a solid opaque waterborne
lacquer.
Generally speaking, stain and UV clears only last 10 years before a refinish is in order.

You may find it hard to fathom, but sometimes small improvements can yield a massive
equity gain due to the fact that a refinished kitchen if done properly, looks like a brand
new kitchen ! Don't throw out good quality Maple and Oak doors, they are hard to come
by nowadays with so many kitchencrafters trying to specify cheapy MDF. Save MDF for
laundry room and basements if you have to use it. I can't stand cutting or breathing in the
carcinogenic off-cut dust myself. Did you not know that MDF is manufactured with
formaldehyde resins ? This stuff was cancerous years ago, and it has not changed.
From Oakville to West Palm Beach, we'll help you modernize that dated golden oak or dark cinnamon 80's look.
We originally started refinishing kitchens during a market surge in Glen Abbey in the late 1980's prompted by a NEED to obtain maximum
market resale price for PHH Homequity on a client transfer. The market was full of challenges in this local area (Monastery/Monk's Passage). This set the stage for what we call a SPIN selling moment/case history. Situation: Aged Cabinetry with Small Transfer reno budget by PHH Problem/ Implication: Home would not receive a good or fair offer, if not spruced up.
Needs/Payoff: A great result was obtained with a strong showing and profitable sale on MLS !
20 year Builder and Factory finishes only last so long on wood cabinetry, don't throw it out, refinish !!! So many Burlington and Oakville kitchens installed in the mid 90's are now dated with aged finishes that have faded from U.V.exposure or hard wear and tear. The kids are older now, doors are not being slammed or banged into as much etc., so it makes sense to refinish those wood doors.
Check out our immersion edge soak video on 2 day cured finishes....you will be amazed !

GCodes, Offset Tolerances and Easy Repeatable Toolpaths
I laughed the other day reading
a Fanuc CNC programming guide when
it did not accurately capture the
need for the following when tracing
cabinet parts outlines:
Offset tolerances need to be at minimum
in the 3/32" range when working with case
sheetgoods, due to shear tear-out and finish
sanding needed post-cut. Anyone programming to the .000 thousandth needs to account for this
variance. Again, you are making parts that need to be hand assembled, prepped, and spray finished. Keep this in mind, maybe two end panels would have been done better by just cutting on a sliding table saw. Think about your workflow before working...it really does pay off !
Toolpaths needed to be thought out in
advance, ie the Atc tooling head needs to
Be told to drill shelf peg holes BEFORE
cutting to dimension the actual part.
Vac tables being what they are, they cannot always hold perfectly and the machining force
of 37mm setback hinge holes is enough to twist and damage the part being skin-cut. I saw this at another cabinetmakers shop and immediately pointed it out. Problem?...solved.
Slow the ipm travel paths to an optimum cut speed, trying to show off your latest Thermwood Cs43 by running it to the envelope just leads to broken pcd bits that cost 565.00 each from Royce. DONT DO IT, it also leads to gantry misalignment over the long term. Stick to speeds below 700 ipm or even less. No one drives their car with the needle buried, why do this to your CNC ? A second toolpath pass to drill or shape in two runs may result in a better finish than causing "chatter" on a cabinet door edge. The old adage, sometimes two small steps together leads to a big step of accomplishment over time.
This can be applied to any wood shaping approach.
This is the best Cnc guide I've learned....
Blows away the shitty Thermwood Manual...
Just sayin'...!
Always test cut your custom g code program on a spoilboard.!!! No one bats .1000 !
Any island or casework wider than 4 feet should be assembled on site, don't trust our shitty Halton roads, the vibration is just unreal at causing shifting and racking misalignment.
Less glue is better, Titebond has a hold force of at least 2000 psi, sanding off sloppy glue from an end panel or frame join may take longer than you think, you can always add more.

Waterborne Lacquers Still the Best...
Ask any cabinet refinisher or new wood cabinetry manufacturer about why they no longer use solvented or post-cat nitrocellulose.
Danger from MEK Solvents
Flash combustible, does not meet Greenguard
Danger to homeowner on touch-up
Early yellowing in conversion finishes
Crack at interpanel seams more noticeable than wb lacquer
Hazardous Airpollutant
Cancer causing benzene and stoddard solvents
Colorscapes uses the same excellent AcromaPro
and Target Coatings waterborne lacquers as the
big conglomerate cabinet companies. NO ONE
IN THEIR RIGHT MIND IS STILL USING CATALYZED POST-CAT, THEY CANNOT EVEN FIND SPRAY TECHS WHO WILL WORK WITH
THAT GARBAGE ! YOU CANNOT REPAIR SOLVENTED FINISHES ON-SITE IT IS TOO DANGEROUS FOR A HOMEOWNER TO CONSIDER.

Enough of this 2018 Winter already,
It's been ridiculuous to say the least,

Great Donuts...Hit the Monster !
The fighter pilots that train at Miramar
And NAS Oceana swear by a couple morning
donuts with black coffee pre-training flights.
Reason being its close to being a perfect complex carb/protein ratio for clear thinking.
If they knew Donut Monster was around they'd be dropping in...

In progress...goodbye Golden Oak ...Hello Modern ...
Great thx to Gary and Shelly !
Another successful refinish in our
Thoroughsand Shop Process
A nice modern look with dark contrast Amerock Hardware. Samsung Hood by Goeman's installed by homeowners. Tile backsplash to follow.
Valances to follow,using the new Sherwin Williams non-splitting 1050 fast-dry caulking !
Colour: SW7566 Westhighland White
Finish : Target UltraSatin WB Lacquer
Some jobs we default to the better white hiding power of Target Coatings Emtech6500 Series.
Thousands of doors spray finished...
If Uncle Sherwin cares to listen, there is about 5% too much vehicle diluent in the Acromapro off-white (our opinion). Too much burn in affects the integrity of the primer.
