Client required a new Whirlpool Microwave installed
above range. Existing cabinetry was standard 30" tall
doors. Shaped 2 new standard 12 x 15" width in
raised panel cinnamon stained to match. Added
new Blum Modular clip hinges and made custom
box with reinforced crossbar hangers to take
microwave weight.

Client loves the freed up counter space and the
320CFM built in Microwave Fan.

The advantages of waterborne lacquers:

• Greenguard and GS 11 Approved 
• Low voc's
• Non yellowing
• KCMA 5+ rating 
• SCAQMD rated
• Thousands of colours
• No catalysts or sensitizer catalysts required
• Easy for homeowner to touch up in the event of scuff

• Solvented lacquers on the other hand:

• Flammable vapour
• Requires NFPA33 and OSHA certified booth ( great for the booth guys)
• Carcinogenic profile is documented
• Is anyone actually still spraying nitrocellulose lacquer ???

Hmmm....which one to pick.....at the end of the day your
cabinet doors are just decorative pieces of wood hiding foodstuffs
and keeping your kitchen looking neat. Let's not go
overboard, we heard some guy is trying to put epoxy
on doors....OVERKILL OVERKILL OVERKILL.....!!!
do you not realize there could be small children
and pets in the home ? Get a grip. That stuff is not
meant for cabinetry and is illegal to apply in a non
ventilated work area...

to approach what we do with clients is to listen.....

I need someone who can come on short notice to refinish

We are not a production cabinetry shop producing 100-1000 doors a day
(That is a legacy business and we don't want to re-invent the wheel)
Once you go big, you can never turn back as you get saddled with
equipment leases that are huge. Better make sure you are using
that CNC for making not only cabinets, but screen doors, islands,
valances,crown,benches etc.

We are right-sized small custom refinishers and cabinet makers
who believe in hard work and competitive pricing completing
work that lasts and looks good for a long time.

Let someone else toss and turn at night spending 18.00 tmi per sqft2
and babysitting 6-8 staff. YOU CANNOT WORK IN 3 LOCATIONS
AT ONCE ! Shop, In Field, Retail/Office.  Pick 2 !

There is a reason that successful cabinet refinishers work out of
small shops, they understand quickly that lease costs are prohibitive
to competitive pricing. A refinishing price of anywhere north
of 5K is ridiculous, 10K is brand new cabinetry. Spending 30kto 50k on a new kitchen might be worth it, and...it might not be, it's all market timing, and...time in the market...;)

Why does it take 10-12 days for an excellent result ?

WE ARE FOLLOWING AWI AND KCMA methods for PRODUCING 
excellent cabinetry AND FINISHES.

YOU CANNOT OBTAIN A GOOD RESULT SPRAYING CABINETS
WHILE HUNG THEY DO NOT DO THIS IN ANY CABINET SHOP. !

Avoid the idiots who say they can come in and spray your cabinetry while
it is still affixed to the hardware..it looks horrible,drips, runs and sags everywhere.

LACQUER IS ALWAYS SPRAYED ON THE FLAT for BEST APPEARANCE
THEN IT IS SANDED BACK BETWEEN COATS FOR ADHESION AND
MIRROR SMOOTH FINISH.

I SPENT THOUSANDS OF HOURS IN CABINET SHOPS AS A PRO COATINGS
REP FOR ML CAMPBELL/SW and ICI AND HELPED SHAPE THE INDUSTRY
TOWARDS LOW VOC WATERBORNE FINISHES that ARE SAFE TO SPRAY AND
PERFORM BEAUTIFULLY. Years ago Magnalac and KlearVar were sold as overkill catalysed
finishes til the industry saw that these finishes were yellowing badly and cracking
at all interjunctions of rail and stile. Catalyzed finishes are dangerously high in
solvent and can explode in a kitchen. Your insurance will never cover a mistake
like this. The guys spraying hybrid alkyds are just as stupid and are risking homeowner's
safety. DO NOT SPRAY ANY COATING THAT HAS 6LBS of Stoddard Solvent
and Benzene in its formulation, you are asking for trouble ! Anyone spraying
solvented catalzyed lacquers is shortening his/her own life and the life of their clients.
Waterborne lacquers have advanced dramatically in the last 25 yrs and are the
benchmark to which all other coatings are now measured.

EPOXY ON CABINETS IS A BIG MISTAKE, it is NOT MEANT to be used on
expanding wood. ! The firms offering this will be besieged with complaint calls
in 6-9 months after application. The surface tension of epoxy is too hard when
cured and will not move with a wood substrate the way a single component
waterborne lacquer will.

WE USE A RECOGNIZED KCMA APPROVED LACQUER that is USED
BY THE BIG 3 CABINET MAKERS.

KITCHENCRAFT, KRAFTMAID AND WELLBORN ALL USE KCMA
WATERBORNE LACQUERS ON ALL SPECIES OF  CABINETRY PRODUCED
IN PLANT. THEY DO NOT USE EPOXY PERIOD AS IT WOULD DESTROY
ALL AUTOMATED APPLICATION EQUIPMENT AND NOZZLES.

OLD TECHNOLOGY IS DANGEROUS TECHNOLOGY.

Straightforward repaint in home set to be sold
in Oakville this fall. Cabinets refinishing underway

that classy subtle look with good washability.

Cinnamon Spice had it`s day back in the late 80s and
90`s as it was an easy finish for Canac to apply
prior to their departure to North Carolina.

Nowadays, its about the COLOUR and the HARDWARE POP !
The best kitchens we`ve worked on have coloured cabinetry
and have moved away from the ole`woodgrain look.

Woodgrained cabinetry absorbs light in a kitchen
and does not highlight profile work like a nice off-white
or stone colour...

It's that time of year again for the Blue Jays...! The World Series that never happened in 1994...

The Jays are surging of late, the bats have come alive with Troy Tulowitzki
and Devon Travis carrying the hit parade...If you have not been down
to a game lately, go...its awesome, we saw Tulo's grand salami on
Sept 11 sitting in Section 125 and it was electric...

This team has a destiny to fulfill...there is too much talent whether it
is this year or next we will see...

There may never be a year again like 1993 but it's nice to see
a winner in the city after the disastrous 1994 Strike Season
when the Expos were 34 games over .500 and should have been
given the World Series trophy. It has taken the fans 20 years
to come back to MLB baseball. At one point in 1994, the Jays led the
AL East by 3 games and would have conceivably met
the Expos in the World Series...some people say the
MLB strike was orchestrated to prevent this from happening.
Who knows ?

Having lost my parents to both Alzheimers and a Brain Tumour, every
year we donate thousands of dollars to both Cancer and AD charities.
We also believe strongly in the mission of Cystic Fibrosis Canada
through the Hamilton Chapter Princess Ball. (Direct all Donations to
hamiltonchapter@cysticfibrosis.ca)

My Dad's AD was due largely to CTE from playing pro and semi-pro football
in the CFL and club leagues (London Knights) and the Canadian Navy (Shearwater) for several years ( 9 documented concussions). His autopsy confirmed CTE and was done by Hamilton Health Sciences after his passing in 2008. Prior to his developing AD, his memory and cognitive skills were excellent into his mid 60's.

His best friend growing up was Russ Jackson,a CFL Legend. He also played with the famous George Brancato, one of the best Italian football players to ever play in the CFL. Frank Clair was also a buddy of his on the Rough Riders. This was an era where a white collar job paid much more than a football player in the fledgling CFL
(1958-1961).

His journey with AD concluded at St. Josephs in Hamilton in 2008.

My Mom developed a fast growing frontal lobe tumour in her brain that took her from us in less than 68 days.

Carpenter Hospice and Joseph Brant/Juravinski did a fantastic job ensuring that her final days were surrounded with dignity and love.

These diseases require research dollars and
people participating to assist the cause. Give what you can as we do every year. It does matter. :)

Another Grand Staircase....

Prior staircase golden oak, power oscillated and hand sanded over
21 hours, finish application taking place over 3-4 days.


The great thing ? The homeowners could walk on the staircase 1.5 hours
after clear coat application on treads with waterborne clear lacquer topcoat
in Akvaline 212-40 Satin.

The white/black combination really elevates the foyer entrance and gets rid
of that yesteryear look of Golden Oak.

Client chose a striking contrast to highlight veining
in carrera marble countertop.

Also installed 4 1/2" MDF kickplates custom sprayed and angle
mitred on bases, something you don't normally see in a builder
kitchen (they give you those flimsy 1/4" veneers).

Notice the sleek induction stove on counter - does away with a bulky
range and you get the added bonus of 3 storage drawers below in
a standard 36" wide base cupboard.

Current Project: Strip and Refinish 80's Pickled Oak

We are currently assisting a client with removal
of pickled oak finish from the late 1980's and
refinishing with our KCMA approved lacquer
from Sherwin-Williams. Kitchen is large
at 45+ doors and drawers. It is rare to see
this kind of quality White Oak species in
raised panel and we are fortunate to be
given this project. It takes one or two
of us approximately 45 min to 1 hour
of labour per door after orbital profiling,
Irwin rake chisel tooling of profiles and
final vacuum sanding with 11hp extraction.
We then do a final alcohol cleaning with
Methyl Hydrate to ensure that no residues
interfere with priming and finishing.

For those of you die hard clear coat finish fans
this finish is beginning to tack and fail and is not
as bombproof as you think, its at the point where
all the kitchen residues are beginning to stick to
doors and frames because it has finally decayed
from UV exposure.

Fieldstone Face Frame Refaced Kitchen/ Bench Storage Cabinetry

Two unique projects we completed in June...

Face framing (old school technique) with
inset Shaker 2.25 stile maple cabinetry...
the complexity is far greater than simple
frameless Euro cabinetry, and its a lot
more fun and visually interesting to look at !
We don't find frameless cabinetry that hard
to build, just really boring..snoooooze........
let the builders install that junk if they want.
I prefer the challenge of using my Microgauge
and building a .0001 tolerance face frame with
Kreg Pocket Screw joinery and wood glue
in an old school technique that actually requires
some woodworking skills, anyone can dial in
an e-cabinet file and watch a CNC pre cut
bored holes on a Thermwood CS-43.

I always thought if you are turning a kitchen
in 1 week with MDF doors and frameless
boxes it's not going to last very long or
fetch much in value. Ever see a Barzotti
Kitchen ? Great quality and refinish friendly
20 years down the road if you get tired of
the look.

Client gave us a blank canvas in terms of wall
depth and width, this is what we can do with
decent turnaround times. All recessed built in
shelving built and spray finished on site after
transporting and fitting base cabinetry built ins.


$900.00 per side, doors are solid MDF finished
in Target EM6500 production lacquer. Solid one
piece doors cut on a Biesse 24C Rover with
Colonial Ogee Autospindle Bit Diamond Series PCD40
(client paid for custom bit from Royce Tool 565.00)

Profiles are an exact match to kitchen cabinetry !
Yes, our rover is back working again after a 62 day
alignment problem with gantry.
