Client wanted a simple and fast installation
of the new OptiShot2.

Some things to note:
Client has 9 foot basement ceilings (newer homes do !)
Benq short-throw projector provided by client
Custom AstroTurf Mat separately ordered

Custom Cabinet for OptiShot 2 Golf Sim and Laptop

A quick update, we just got our first two orders
for Opti-Shot Golf Sim Cabinets, since the golf
simulator does not come with a laptop cabinet stand
or place to store extra practice balls and tees.

If you have not tried the new Opti-Shot 2, its
a huge improvement over the first generation,
giving us golf aficionados the opportunity to
simulate playing Kapalua in our basements
while its minus -10 outside and freezing...!!!

We set up this Opti-Shot 2 for a client
this week, cabinet to follow !

Ancaster Kitchen

Another kitchen we completed recently,
Colour is SW7004 Snowbound. We also
built a custom wall oven cabinet in Maple
for the clients two brand new LG convection
ranges.

We also placed two operable cabinet
door facings on the exhaust hood detail,
for the sole reason of being able to check
for bird nests in the exhaust ducting. We find
this time and again when we pull out an old
range hood...you'd be surprised but birds
often find their way into the ductwork above
your range.

Anyone for a tailfeather with their pasta ? :)

Season's Greetings !

At this time of year, we are taking bookings for January and February
and don't usually dismantle kitchens and re-finish on short notice !
(Does anyone want their kitchen in disarray over the Holidays ? Not usually.)

Pre-Paid Discounts Are Still Available in January and February

We have one open booking in January, two openings in February
with March wide-open as of this post. Pre-paid bookings
qualify for additional 15 % off !!!

We also do NOT charge PST or GST on refinishing, it is not
taxable as it does not meet the GST criteria for taxation.
We've checked and double checked Canadian tax law
and only NEW manufactured goods (cabinets, doors, crown
moulds) qualify for taxation.

Great thanks from Colorscapes for all the interesting projects
we've had a chance to assist on this year....we are lucky
to have some great clients to work for :)

We also encourage our blog readers/clients to donate to
local food banks and grocery stores for those
less fortunate at this time of year.

Maple Shaker/Beadboard with Coffee Glaze

Project: Build 22 New Maple Shaker Doors
with Beadboard Panel / Set-in Glaze

Clients wanted Maple Shaker Thin Profiled
Rail/Stiles with Dark Amerock Hardware.
Beadboard Panel channels were
stained with a Dark Espresso detail glaze.

An interesting one for us to do with a laundry
nook right off the side of the kitchen. You
might see more kitchens in the future be
right beside or incorporate laundry to
aid in multi-tasking. (Not as much running
from room to room).

22 new custom cabinets/doors
NGR Coffee Maple Glaze Stain
Akva 240 Clear Coat

Walls painted in Promar LoSheen 200

Great thanks to Pia and Alex for the project !

Also great thanks to Tom at Biesse for assisting
in coding our Beading patterns on our CNC router.

Finishing Touches....Basement Kitchen Etobicoke

Project:  22 new Shaker Arctic White Frame And Panel Doors
              (Simple Square Shaker)

Hardware and Hinges by Richelieu

Finishing touches adding crown to a basement
cabinetry project we did back in October...client's
budget allowed for some additional crown mould !

Counters go in Monday !

Great thanks to Sandy and Glen C. for the project !
Total budget for this project was just under $2700.00

Scribe Cut Copy Roman Ogee Doors for Client

Project: Scribe Cut & Copy Roman Ogee Arched Doors

Client asked us to build two new arched doors above
fridge to match existing legacy profiled Barzotti Doors.
No problem !

Here's the two doors for our client to see prior to
install...just waiting for some overlay hinges to be delivered !
(panels are cut last).

The trick to doing Roman arches is....they take twice as long
to do....measure three times, cut once !!! Our CNC program
handles arches easily..its the coding that's a bitch to program !!!

In Progress....39 Cabinet Kitchen !

Client has chosen OC-17 White Dove,
a nice off-white in our KCMA approved
lacquer finish. Big kitchen, lots of doors
had to be hand sanded and profiled
prior to priming and spray finishing.

Again, we take all doors down off-site
so the homeowner's kitchen does not
become a woodshop ! It's the right
way instead of some turkeys who
try to finish doors on-site and just
end up with a big mess.

The great thing about using lacquer is its
adhesion value on lightly sanded melamine
on the inside of cabinets, something a paint does
not adhere well to.

Acroma Pro lacquers are hands down, refinisher
friendly and there is only a mild fresh aroma.
Dry time is also fantastic as we can also touch
up doors on the "fly". The homeowners love
the easy touch up...gone are the days of
thermofoil or solvented lacquers.

And here it is complete with new 4" and 5"
bar handle Richelieu Hardware...great thanks
to Richelieu for the new drill guide templates,
we cut our time on hardware install down to
less than 4 minutes a door !

Previous Maple Kitchen had faded and bleached
out from 12 yrs of sun exposure and UV.

Great thanks to Sonia and John for the project !

Rochester Blue....in Rochester

Colour: Rochester Custom Blue
Hardware: Amerock Oil Rubbed Bronze
Tile: Lavastone Mosaic

Effective combinations of colour can produce
staggering room effects....clients went for
a brown/blue modern approach...
there is no hint of French Provincial anywhere here..
just a lot of warm and bold country colours...

Here's what we did:

  • Built and spray finished 32 Shaker Maple Cabinets
  • Built Custom Arched Exhaust Hood in Shaker Design
  • Custom Sketch and Build of 3 seat Island with Bottle Racking
  • Sourced a local counter top installer
  • Built 2 Decorative Walls with Sconce Shaped Headers
  • Refinished Legacy Shaker Table Top with Akvaline Clear 240
  • Turned job around in under 28 days (vs Kraft Maid's 11 weeks).
  • Check out the "tree branch" chandelier...a neat find !

Here is what the kitchen looked like
before I arrived...the old fashioned bottom
pull handle melamine/oak handled cabinetry
from circa 1978.....the only thing we were
able to save was the flooring...lol !

Great thanks to Kerry and Phil for the project !

Mirror Mirror on the Wall...

An interesting mirror project to do...matches the rest
of the bathroom trim !

Doors with Glass Mirrors were uninstalled, shop
sprayed and re-installed with clean hingework.

Colour: OC-65 Chantilly Lace
Finish: AcromaPro S/G Lacquer

Deglossing Clear finished Maple Cabinetry

Current project: Maple Cabinetry by Paul's Cabinetry
Finish chosen: AcromaPro S/G Lacquer
Color  chosen  : OC-17 White Dove (Moore's)

The critical sanding prep we do guarantees
excellent long term adhesion, notice the lack
of sheen on the left cabinet door once it
receives proper deglossing and sanding.
We chuckle when we hear of "painters"
Spraying cabinets unsanded  while
still attached to the hardware....have fun
on those callback trips...! Some cabinet
doors we have completed require close
to 1 hour prep sanding, filling, and contour
Sanding of delicate profiles. THIS IS THE
RIGHT WAY TO FINISH WOOD....Any one telling
you that they can finish your doors on site in 1 day
is a joke show and should be avoided. There are
too many jokers who think nothing of turbine
spraying all over your hardware and leaving
your kitchen a mess....

We hand sand all delicate finely crafted
Maple Cabinetry prior to spray finish, followed by
power vacuuming and cleaning with methyl
hydrate. Our shop process and finish
is time tested and proven, it is a KCMA
approved process and has allowed us
to successfully complete close to 285
kitchens in both Canada and the U.S. with
great resale effect and that "wow" factor !!!

Curing in the rack prior to re-install....

Kitchen #147 Cloud White...Classic Looks...

Classic Cabinetry by Barzotti re-finished
in AcromaPro lacquer, a fine
professional non-yellowing lacquer...

Client called us for obvious reasons..an old
1980's looking Walnut/Clear Finished Kitchen
that needed an update... !

An ideal project for us to demonstrate
the effectivness of lacquer spray finishing aged
nitrocellulose clear coated cabinetry.

Remember, hybrid paints like Cabinet Coat and
Proclassic, contain alkyd resins which yellow over
a short period of time...Lacquer, on the other hand,
will never yellow and is the EASIEST to touch up
as successive touch-ups melt right into the existing
finish...

Great thanks to Matt and Kristin for the project !

Existing Client's Refinished Original Barzotti
Pine Arched Cathedral Doors....these are over 25+ yrs
old and are still in great condition build-wise, just needed
a new refinishing system on top !

Note the wet hiding power of Akvasurf primer, it completely
blows away any retail branded wood primer/surfacer and is
designed exclusively for millwork/cabinetry spray
application.

Great thanks to Janine M. for the project !

Great Hardware Sites for Clients to Check Out... !

We refer some of our clients to the following
online hardware retailers...

www.thehardwarehut.com
www.jgedelen.com

Hardware Hut carries alot of the common hardware
and even difficult to find overlay hinges from Amerock.

J.G. Edelen has been a household name down south
since the early 20's and are famous for their corner
braces for panel joining, furniture making etc.

Have a look...! You might save a bundle, one
of our clients ordered 60 new hinges and they
cost about 1.22 each, compared to 7.89 ea
at retail !

Trout Lake Cottage Kitchen Renewal

Great thanks to the Kallen's for the above project.
We replaced 24 cabinets with a custom triple
dish router design on flat maple stock doors
with a 1/16" chamfered edge,and we added
some nice Amerock Hardware for
a nominal fee. We then dropped in a nice
Vissani stainless kitchen hood, the client
sourced a modern washable wall treatment
for behind the range and we installed after
Cabinets were rehung.

This kitchen is the result of a Google Sketch
we came up with last fall to utilize a 14' x 16'
kitchen in a client's northern fishing retreat.
It's a modern and effective result to what
once was a very dated kitchen.

It was fun for a change to be the project
manager AND installer on this one...usually
we are doing what our clients want to the
letter...on this one I got to call the shots lol !

Ralph Lauren Re-Introduction at Home Depot

Ralph Lauren's famous colour selections and product
line has been re-introduced at Home Depot this fall
featuring some nice blues, classic whites and designer
chosen rustic shades.

For those of you that remember, RL Paints were
first brought into Canada by Sherwin Williams
in 1996, by a team of people at SW including
myself and became a very fast selling and well
recognized brand until licensing rights were
acquired by ICI/Glidden in 2001.

It will be interesting to see what happens to
the brand support this time around...

There are some fantastic colours and names
for those who are inspired to get that
Ralph Lauren look to their homes.
And, of course Indigo Denim, Antique
Leather and Faux Metallic has been
included.

Northampton Project Burlington,ON

Another completed project door up close
refinished in Cloud White CC-40 with Amerock
Oil Rubbed Hardware mounted.

The biggest challenge we faced on this set
of oak profiled doors was severe tannin bleed
by a DIY product from Benjamin Moore that
had absolutely zero holdout...we remedied the situation
with AcromaPro Bernyl Universal Primer and
Spray finished on top with AkvaTopp Waterborne
Lacquer, a proven system which will resist tannin
bleed through on white cabinetry.

Finish: AcromaPro S/G Lacquer 50 Sheen

Lacquer vs Paint for Cabinetry..Why use a Lacquer Finish ?

Waterborne Lacquer has the following advantages:

  • Faster dry time and turnaround
  • Non Yellowing vs. Hybrids which still yellow over time
  • Better mar resistance to common kitchen spills
  • Resistance to Scalding Coffee vs. NONE with Trim Paint
  • Extremely low voc, some trim paints are not even Leeds 9 approved
  • Lacquer is more resistant to chipping than paint
  • Lacquer adheres tighter than paint
  • Unlimited colour choices...18,000 and counting...
  • Super Safety Profile, easy to work with
  • Low odor...coconut fragrance to freshly sprayed lacquer

Headon Forest Refinishing Project

Two different areas in a home with two
different looks and approaches to colour....

The HC-71 Hasbrouck Brown looks effective
when combined with nickel hardware, wheareas
a clean modern white helps the built-ins retain
a classic refined look in the living area.

We also custom cut and installed a full wall of
Shaker wainscotting...very economical way to
hide builder drywall imperfections and give
the entranceway an accent wall. Finished
in CC-40 Cloud White mixed in Becker Acroma
semi-gloss lacquer.

Last but not least we custom built an
in-wall bookshelf unit and added 8 Windsor
Profile Doors with new Hardware again
finished in a Cloud White CC-40.
This is where our CNC Rover 24 really shines
as we had doors shaped and the general cut
layouts done in under 1 hour, then it's just
a matter of light sanding and spray finishing
in shop and installing at the client's home.!

Great thanks to Mike and Kelly for the project !
Also thanks to Tom C. at Biesse with our fine
adjustments for CNC cut layouts.

Strip and Refinishing Project using Dumond Smart Strip : Burlington Orchard

Project: Rehabilitate Aged Brown Painted Cabinetry
Finish Chosen: S/G Lacquer
Colour: SW 7002 Downy

We picked up 25+ doors and drawers from this
client late last week and completed this project
Aug 28/2014 in time for the tiling to be done
by the client. !

Removing multiple layers of a heavy acrylic coating
from existing oak cabinetry to prep for refinishing...
we are amazed at the efficacy of Dumond's Smart
Strip System with covering paper. The cover paper
assists with dwell time and allows the stripper to
remain active and not dry out too quickly. We
are removing 3 coats of existing finish, plus
a previous burgundy/mahogany stain that
had a varnish clear coat on top.

Cabinets required 5 passes for a maximum film
build of 9-10 mils with a nice and durable
semi-gloss sheen chosen for maximum mar
resistance and cleanability (family has 3 dogs !).

We not only repositioned new 3" spaced hardware
but we also custom cut a new end panel in
maple veneer which is a big upgrade over the
existing builder particle board for the dishwasher
panel.

Great thanks to the Dann's for the project !

Budget Considerations: Champagne vs Beer....

We often get asked how we can deliver a pleasing
result at the low prices we charge.

Here's the answer:

1. We keep a low overhead on our business - we don't have
a 50,000 sqft facility rent to pass on. We are small and
like being small because it gives us control over pricing.

2. We consider your budget: Is this a cottage reno where
you want to keep prices low or a pending staging....we
try to "partner" with the client to meet a challenge that
    suits us both.

3. We never gouge...I've heard some firms charge 7-10,000
and as much as 15,000 to spray refinish 35 cabinet doors
and kitchen...Are you kidding me ? New cabinetry from
Kraft Maid and Schuler as well as IKEA can be had for
as little as 105.00 per lineal foot. Why would a client pay
for upcycling old when they can have brand new at less
   than that price ?

4. We sleep better at night and stay busier knowing we have
to chase the rabbit ie. some money and provide a good
value for the client, that does not break their budget.

5. Low staffing - we don't have an army of mouths to feed, in
fact the trend nowadays is for 1 and 2 man painting companies
that do excellent work. Who can afford to carry multiple staff
in this economy....only the industrial painting contractors who
are doing schools and airports, bridges etc.

6. We've already achieved alot of success...we don't seek the
unobtainable or crazy dreams some people have, we are
pragmatic, efficient and easy to get along with.

11.8.14

Booking for Late Sept, Oct and November.

Just a quick reminder, we take in on average
8-15 calls a week for painting work, the key
is to book in with your deposit if you have
been quoted that way we can schedule
the work and gather supplies for the project.
We will not start any project without
a "good faith" deposit. It helps us avoid
the tire kickers and of course, competing
paint firms doing competitive intelligence...

At current we have two weeks open in
September, 1 week in October and 2 weeks
in November.

10.8.14

Two-Tone Kitchen !

Colours: ICI White Pearl and Stonington Beige (Two-Tones)
Finish: Becker Acroma AkvaTopp 50 Sheen
Previous Finish: Espresso Builder Stain/Clear

Clients originally contacted us because of
difficulty cleaning cabinetry without leaving
residues on the dark Espresso finish, they
also sought to make the cabinets more
closely match the new glass tile backsplash
and brighten things up a bit, as the kitchen
was fairly dark during the day....

From the dry rack to completed kitchen with
almost no dust in your home from sanding !!!

Having experimented with many types of shop racks
(Richelieu/Venjakob etc.) we still find we get the most
use out of our spruce drying rack which can hold
over 50 doors in a space confined to 5 foot by 3 foot.

Wood racking does not damage a curing door because
it is softer than structural steel and less prone to sticking.

You'll notice we tag all of our cabinet doors on the side
end so that we know which pass it's on (3rd or 4th coat)
and where it belongs in a kitchen sequence. T1, B1. K1 etc.

We think our quality control in finishing rivals that of the
big automated cabinet companies, I have seen my share
of automated machines go off-kilter and usually these
machines do not own a set of "eyes" to catch misses
and low spots.

Great thanks to the Jacksons for the project !
