Lead Times for Cabinet Projects

Just a friendly reminder to some clients I have
spoken to regarding cabinet refinishing, that
colour selections and finishes require 2 weeks
lead time to notify our supplier for ordering...

Gravity Gun vs. Cup Gun

I recently had a co-worker ask me..."What's better
for spraying cabinetry...gravity or pressure feed cup gun ?"

The differences between each gun are largely physical
and cosmetic, as both require air-mix to atomize coatings so the
process remains the same for fluid delivery to the substrate.

The real difference between gravity gun and pressure fed cup
guns comes in operator comfort and easing of spray fatigue.
If you load up a pressure cup gun full, it can get heavy after
1 hour of spraying, leading to operator fatigue early in a job,
as well as the fact that cup guns don't perform well when
angled over or leaned to the side. You will find that most
pro spray finishers love gravity guns because they are lighter,
easier to change out colours (with a minimum of cleaning),
and respond well when leaned on a 90 degree angle to spray
things like kickplates and cabinet bases.

Cleaning a gravity cup is also much easier with the pre-inlet
strainer easy to pop out and clean prior to refit with a new
colour or just maintenance cleaning to store before the next
project.

While it is my .02 cents I am sharing here, anyone trying
out a new compressor and spray gun, opt for a cheaper gravity
gun with at least a 2 button dial for optimizing liquid delivery
and spray fan pattern...you will thank me down the road instead
of complaining about how difficult cup guns are to clean and maintain
and how the needle sets don't always work well when retrofitted.

Decorative Concrete Effects

Why let a boring concrete surface go

unfinished ? Did you know that by adding

a coating to concrete you increase its

ability to withstand carbonization and

deterioration ? Coated concrete becomes

stronger as the normal dry out cycle

is interrupted and the process of carbon attack

and alternating cycles of moisture wick

and release is negated.

Resistance to motor oils, spills of

household substances and other

chemicals prolongs the life of

any concrete surface !!

Acid Staining and Decorative Anti-Slip

Coatings are all the rage right now...

Everything in the world has colour.....

The chemical coatings and paint industry is an estimated
330 billion dollar market according to Forbes.com.

When you take a close look at your surroundings
almost everything you see or touch has a chemical
dye or pigment in it - clothing, cars, furniture,
toys, computers etc. It is amazing when you think
about the fact that many buildings and infrastructural
items like bridges and tunnels, ships are all protected
by one thing...PAINT.

Whether it's a specialized lining for the interior
ballast tanks of a Navy nuclear submarine or
a simple clear coat for a piece of furniture, they
are all doing the same thing at base level and that
is protecting the substrate. The only
difference is between the types of resins, catalysts
and film forming additives used.

To think of the paint and industrial coatings industry
as only being approximately 100 yrs old gives
us some idea as to where technology is headed....!

Someday, you will be buying your house
paint in a Tetrapak and possibly adding your
own colorants to it in pill form or powder form
from a kit. Once done with it, the pak will dissolve
and be biodegradable and no harm to the
environment. Paint manufacturers are
working on this technology as we speak.

Voc compliance is pushing technology
quickly in this direction, the only push
backwards so far has been the big
retailers who like the stackable can
format and packaging. Going to Tetrapaks
will greatly reduce the need for bauxite
and aluminum processing for paint cans
and help preserve our mineral capacity
for more important uses.

The only question remains, which
paint company is going to step up
and take the lead on this packaging
and complete reversal from reliance
on liquid colorant dispersion ?

Airless Spray of CMU block

Over the weekend, we completed about 1600 sq/ft2
of basement cinder block with an airless rig (Graco 490 Max)
shooting a heavy acrylic block filler from ICI Paints.
(BloxFill 4000)

What amazes us time and again is not only production rates
while spraying, but also the quality of finish. Using a .033
tip the coating sheen left to cure is almost
flawless and really addresses the dampness of the
existing below grade block.

By painting and filling the masonry block units you achieve
two important qualities:

1. Strengthens the integrity of the block by filling voids.

2. Creates an effective and preventative moisture barrier.
Many people do not realize many block filler coatings
actually possess an R value and provide additional
insulation against cold and moisture in the walls.
At one time Para Paints spent heavily on a product called
Radiance which was designed to reduce energy and heating
costs and could be applied to walls and ceilings on a variety
of substrates.

This basement had unfortunately received flooding
during a bad rain stretch back in 2007 and the weeping
tile had been obstructed by a large tree root - all stick
framing and 2 x 4's had to be pulled out as well
as all drywall and furniture that was damaged.

Great thanks to JD Restorations for the weeping tile
repair as it has held perfectly for over 2 yrs now
and withstood the hellish rains of late October 2011 !

Basement Kitchen Project

Relocating a basement kitchen vent airway is not always
an easy task, but we got the job done all the same.

Before you start cutting into someone's ceiling , it helps
to make sure you drill some exploratory holes before
you get that reciprocating saw humming - hidden wires
and gas line pipe are common on exterior walls and this
you have to watch for when doing any kind of work
in the ceiling. Taking it slow and doing it right is our
way of doing things....

And you can bet there was a gas line pipe
coming into this ceiling from the east elevation
service line. We knew we'd find one there
because the gas meter is on that side of the home !

As always great thanks to our clients Bruno & Jane !

Edge Soak on Cabinet Lacquers vs Paint

One thing we like to educate our clients about is
"edge-soak" testing of cabinetry lacquers
that are KCMA approved. Regular acrylic
house paints and finishes will not stand up
to an edge soak testing in a mild diluted
solution - hot water/soap or mild cleanser.

We are aware that a paint company in Burlington
is finishing kitchen cabinets with regular house
finishes (wall finishes) and wish to educate
them that this is less than ideal for their client
base. No doubt, lots of callbacks for chip-off
and corner peeling etc. The best cabinet
finishing products contain Roshield or Rhoplex resins
and are best suited to millwork finishing.

We routinely check our millwork coatings
suppliers edge-soak ratings in light of the
newer VOC restrictions to make sure
we provide an excellent solution to
revitalize aged cabinetry.

Feel free to review edge soak ratings
on the Web.

Our next project Roseland Burlington

This small project in Roseland Burlington

involved small renovations and repainting

of 4 rooms. However, our first challenge was to

animal proof a gable vent over the

garage and prep/repaint.

Many homeowners in the Halton

and surrounding locales are seeing

an explosion in critter and nuisance

wildlife in attics, sheds, garages

and decking. The problem is really

due to the fact that not too many

people hunt anymore and these

animals proliferate in new

subdivisions finding easy meals

from garbage and litter.

The most important thing is

to limit or prevent access

to attics/foundation walls

and gables with a combination

of mesh screen/polyurethane

foam or galv. flashing.

Great thanks to Salnek's

of Ancaster for providing

Eclipse Line California

Shutters in the upper

entertainment room/hallway.

Best Paint Brands....Our Opinion !

We often get asked what brands we prefer in application
and which brands we rely on to get the job done...

We prefer Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore
for all architectural work and Akzo's exterior
Rubbol/Sikkens line for decks and siding.

These brands are always in the top ratings categories
in quality and focus group surveys by PQI
(Paint Quality Institute) and organizations like
Consumer Reports.

Hide, Mileage, Flow, Leveling and Field Colour
Performance all rank much higher in the SW,ICI
and Ben Moore brands than you commonly see
in the smaller regional paint grinders from state to state
and province to province.

Face Frame vs Overlay Hinge for Cabinets

We recently had a client ask us
if it was possible to migrate to the
hidden euro hinge from a current
face frame bar hinge on a 1- 5/8"
face frame on her cabinets.

The answer is YES and we do this
with a custom face frame
retrofit hinge from a leading
cabinet hardware manufacturer.

The face frame reveal was a common
cabinet building method used by
many 70's and 80's cabinet companies
because the hidden pocket hinges had
not been invented as of yet - leading
to some frustration for those who
want to hide the hinge hardware and
get away from using bar and pin
hinges.

It is almost that time of year...Raffle Time !

Repeat Client: Bathroom Updates/Walls

Great thanks to Aftica Decor,Sherwin
Williams Burlington and Weeks of Waterdown

Crown Mould/Chair Rail - Trim Installations

We have recently fielded a number of questions
regarding crown mould toppers/wall crown
and chair rails. In the simplest of terms, we
prefer to install solid (not finger jointed) sections
of crown mould in either pine, oak or poplar.

Finger joint pine has a tendency to show
jointed sections when lacquered or painted
and also can have a tendency to vary in
profile once milled. What was 4 -5/8" one
week might be 4 -3/8 the next week at your
local lumber supply which can be real aggravating
to deal with when keeping a consistent look from
room to room or corner to corner.

Linear installation prices start at 5.00 per ft and
top out at around 7.50 per lineal foot.
It has been very difficult to source the popular
6 3/4 and 7" wide crown of late and we apologize
to clients on behalf of the lumber suppliers.

23.9.11

Exterior Season Winding Down...

We only have 1 month left for reasonable outdoor
painting conditions - make sure if considering
outdoor work that you get on top of those
projects before the really bad weather
settles in...

20.9.11

Cabinet Finishing vs Refacing

We often get asked the question...should I reface
or repaint my cabinetry ?

Repainting makes sense when you have cabinetry
that is still structurally sound, no moisture
damage and hardware is in good shape. Refacing
is worth considering when there is moisture
damage, poorly aligned and worn out hardware
and you are tired of the look of the existing
profiles and architectural detail.

Prices will vary but in general terms expect to
pay anywhere from $40-60.00 per cabinet door
for refinishing and anywhere from $180-800.00
per cabinet door for refacing depending on
options like raised panels, crown moulds, finishes
etc. We like to apply a general rule of thumb
for making this decision - if the cabinets are under
20 yrs old and still in decent condition - KEEP them -
if older and damaged - REFACE makes more sense.

Another tip....don't throw 50 or 60K at
a kitchen thinking when you flip your house
that you will get all that you spent back....there
is a such thing as "over-renovating".

Another Cabinet Transformation !

Colour Selected: River Rock Maple
HVLP Finishing of 30+ Cabinets

Total Cost: $2200.00

We still think the transformation from woodgrain veneer to
high-end waterborne lacquer is one of the best kitchen improvements
a homeowner can make ! Easy to clean, easy to touch up
and super fast dry time plus ecologically friendly.... !

All cabinet doors completed off site - not a speck of sanding dust left behind !

Going from medium to dark woodgrain to this colour
makes the kitchen brighter, larger and much more modern.
