Cabinet Finishing vs Refacing

We often get asked the question...should I reface
or repaint my cabinetry ?

Repainting makes sense when you have cabinetry
that is still structurally sound, no moisture
damage and hardware is in good shape. Refacing
is worth considering when there is moisture
damage, poorly aligned and worn out hardware
and you are tired of the look of the existing
profiles and architectural detail.

Prices will vary but in general terms expect to
pay anywhere from $40-60.00 per cabinet door
for refinishing and anywhere from $180-800.00
per cabinet door for refacing depending on
options like raised panels, crown moulds, finishes
etc. We like to apply a general rule of thumb
for making this decision - if the cabinets are under
20 yrs old and still in decent condition - KEEP them -
if older and damaged - REFACE makes more sense.

Another tip....don't throw 50 or 60K at
a kitchen thinking when you flip your house
that you will get all that you spent back....there
is a such thing as "over-renovating".
