Hiding Aged Espresso Finished Cabinetry

On this particular project we noted that the aged
espresso finish (dark brown/clear finish) did not
seem to be aging well and showed every little
grease stain or kitchen residue.

We suggested a nice off white and accent colour
would minimize this and they selected the following
colours for a two-tone look to match some existing
glass tile work...

  • Stonington Beige ICI (Lower Doors)
  • White Pearl ICI (Upper Doors)

We are finishing in Becker Acroma's 50 sheen
Akva Product Line, an excellent waterborne
fast dry mar-resistant lacquer with great
touch-up qualities.

Pics to follow once complete.

Great thanks to the Jackson family for the project !

We are always amazed at the quality
of hiding power of the new waterborne
primers, especially over an abraded surface !

Kona Bath Cabinetry and Kitchen Refinishing

Colours:   Kona Varathane NGR Stain/SW 7004 Snowbound
Clear Finish: Akvaline 240 Becker Acroma

Countertop:  Belanger Composites  Mississauga,ON

Kona Hawaiian Style Cabinets are hugely popular for that
rich dark sophisticated look that is not possible "off the
shelf" at the Big Box stores. Also, Snowbound SW 7004
has been massively popular this year as an effective off-white
colour for kitchen cabinetry. You'll notice we were
able to re-use the existing Modern Windsor Oak Doors
in the bath vanity and just upcycle the finish to a darker
Kona Stain & Clear.

One of the great things about this area in Rochester is being
able to see the Minnesota Twins affiliate Rochester Red Wings
play in Frontier Field during a summer evening while tosssing
down a few ice cold beers ! Gotta love it ! You can't see
the Jays play for 10 bucks each, but you can see the next Jays
play when the Bisons come to town - we saw Dalton Pompey,
Anthony Gose and even the rehab stint of Dustin McGowan
the night we finished the project !

Location:  Rochester,NY

Great thanks to Janelle and Peter for the project !

Great thanks to J&B for the project :)

The following colours/finishes were applied

1. Master Bedroom...Dill Pickle (Benjamin Moore)
2. Kids Double Bunk Room...Amber Waves (Moore's)
3. Main Bath....Antiguan Sky (Moore's)

All colours in scrubbable eggshell finish from Benjamin
Moore's Aura Line. We normally default to Sherwin
Williams' however we wanted no drift of colour during
tint-up for 100% accuracy.

Sometimes, in the coatings industry you see "drift" of colour
due to aged colour process printing of colour chips and
the ability of a competitor to scan match those chips into
an exact colour copy. What happens over time is the ink
suppliers and colour cards actually fade from both sunlight
and repeated re-printing at the print publisher and over
time this can be quite a pronounced shift and move away
from what was the original colour standard.

Humidity and Spray Finishing...what to do to optimize your pattern ?

This week north of the border we are hitting humidex values in
the high 90's and 100's which can affect the quality of flow
viscosity and spray pattern with all kinds of lacquers and finishes.

The key to achieving good spray patterns during these conditions
is to thin your product adequately to hit the proper centipoise
values for 25-27 sec viscosity in # 4 Ford Cup...we use a
little warm distilled water in our gun setups and find a 5-7%
thin ratio will enable the lacquer to drop properly into
the venturi chamber and lead to better spray patterns.

Of course, if your gun is clogged you're in trouble no
matter what, so make sure your gun is flawlessly clean
and needle sets are free from cured product.

Sometimes, like Occam's Razor, the simplest explanation
is the correct one !
