The kitchen of the future is smaller...but more functional and sleek !

Because the trend nowadays is either have a large entertaining kitchen in the heart of the home or minimize and go small for you empty nesters that want to travel in your future....

Here's what we are seeing on the horizon:
(especially in condo's and low rises)

  • Induction range cooktops - counter surface doubles as cooking range
  • (Get rid of the bulky dirty looking Moffat or GE Range)
  • Sleek brushed stainless plumbing fixtures
  • Slim exhaust hoods
  • Flat slab doors with understated handles
  • Hidden wifi portals and security cams
  • Effective task lighting and low wattage consumption (seen your Hydro bill
  • lately ? Stop enriching the fatcats at Hydro One !)
  • Easier to clean, less profiles and smaller granite or stone surfaces (Corian is still
  • excellent)
  • Hidden Appliances with Cabinet Mounts on Fridges etc.
  • If you can afford a massive kitchen in the heart of the home by all means go for it, use
  • the space accordingly as we spend 1/3 of our day in that room...but, realize that
  • small condos the trend is for ultramodern and sleek, think of the movies Passengers
  • and Oblivion, there is some astoundingly beautiful cabinet designs in both those movies
  • as inspiration....photos used courtesy of  Universal and Thom Tenery Design...curvework and soft edged boxes with clean lines and parametric offset design...

Doing work the Hard way and the Right Way...

When we refinish a cabinet door we do it the right
way, by sanding and degreasing/cleaning off
prior animal fat triglyceride compounds from
Mr. Clean, Lysol and god knows what..Murphy's Oil Soap ?

You have to sand or your finish will fish-eye and look
bad on the surface you are painting or staining.
It might take you longer but the result is much better
as you will enjoy a factory finish for years to come
(assuming you are not letting the kids play mini-sticks
or Nerf hockey in your kitchen).

When we sand a staircase, we are removing foot oils,
paste waxes, cleaning compounds and soil from
sneakers and foot traffic. Anyone not sanding is
not doing the work properly. There's some guy
actually promoting what he calls a UV cure process
without sanding that is complete tomfoolery.
Wood has always been sanded and no matter
what "colour-shift" you are looking to do, it
begins with sanding. !

Our Thoroughsand process has never failed us
with over 572 kitchens to date refinished with our
process.

Automated Panel Production with Axiom Custom CNC/Gannomat Mentor Borer

In looking at the picture you might ask yourself
why do they not cut straight down the middle
of a 48" wide Uniboard. Here's why:

Uniboard is not straight edged on one-side
and is rarely a perfect 48" width.

Most uniboard arrives with dents from handling
on one-side due to forklifts etc.

Accurate is when you define the right angle !
Live...and learn.....

Did we mention we bought a Gannomat
Line Borer...wow its fast ! It will bore
two pocket Euro Hinge standard in less
than 6 seconds !

We looked at Thermwood 100k plus
CNC cut centers and decided those
machines require way too much
shop cost and footprint for what its
most valuable for, automating uniboard
cuts,pre-dowels and rabbeted edges. We don't
believe in the MDF door manufacturing
because it requires unsafe toxic primers
and basecoats which takes any cabinet
maker right back into dangerously solvented
(MEK) primers and topcoats. NO THANKS !
There is a reason that VOC legislation was
introduced, to protect workers and people
installing cabinetry and painting on site.

How Not to Lift Paint to a Low Rise Residential Painting Project....

Unfortunately a 25 yr old painter lost his life
last year when a company rep told him it would
be a good idea to lift 5 gallon paint buckets on top
of a skid along with him in an aerial lift
platform. The man fell 5 stories to his death
and was covered in broken paint buckets and
paint, what a disgrace.

This is why you need heights training, this
should never have happened, and it reminds
me of the type of company that rushes to get
things done and cuts corners.

As a worker or employee you have the right
to refuse an unsafe work assignment if you
believe that it could endanger your life.
In high school I once worked for an
"brilliant engineer" at Dufferin
Aggregates who asked me to drive a landscaping
tractor at a 55 degree angle at Milton Quarry.
We are talking the kind of angle that could easily
roll a Deere tractor with a 96" swath cutter behind it
on top of you resulting in instant death.
Guess what I told him ? I'm still here today buddy.
Him ? He was fired for stealing a pickup truck full
of screenings shortly thereafter.

Just because you report to a position in authority
that does not mean they know what they are doing
or asking you to do !

Another Staircase Refinishing Underway...

A good repeat client of ours requested a staircase
refinishing in a 13 yr old RoseHaven Custom Home
in Oakville.

While some contractors try to get by without
sanding, IT IS NECESSARY and required when
reapplying a custom stain and clearcoat. STAIN
will not BOND over Varnish or Clear Coat, it
needs to be applied directly to a bare wood
surface. Then the clear coat can be reapplied.
We also blend matched an aged bullnose
trim to a 13 year old floor...this is the great thing
about having your own UTC colorants and
tint machine in shop !

We follow all AWI Wood Refinishing Standards
so that our clients are guaranteed a great finish !
If you can't be bothered to sand each tread for
25-30 minutes then you should NOT be picking
up a paint brush or stain pad. It reminds me of
the painters who paint over dirt on exterior siding !
Are you kidding me ?

Great thanks to Franca and Angelo M. for the project.

Simple Commission Project

As with any woodworking/painting company
we sometimes take on small commission type
projects to fill in time between larger type
projects and bookings.

Here we are prepping a sturdy red oak Media
Shelf in 3/4 Canadian Red Oak prior
to stain up and adding front doors.

Since oak is not as popular as it once
was costs are fairly reasonable nowadays
on all 3/4 preplaned oak.
