Yup..it's Honda Classic Week

One of my personal favorites to watch and courses
to play, the Honda Classic at PGA National is in
full-on mode this week in Palm Beach Gardens,Fla.

Our lucky clients Petra and Mike D. opted
to go down this week as winner's of last
falls trip raffle, we sincerely hope they
enjoy their stay in a Deluxe King Suite
on the grounds of PGA National.

Mike will be playing the redesigned
Fazio course which recently reopened
to rave reviews.

For those that are unaware, every year we
place 35 - 40 raffle tickets in a fishbowl
for our clients and draw 1 lucky winner
for 1 week fully paid at 1 of the following:

1. PGA National West Palm Beach
2. Kingsmill Golf Resort, Williamsburg,Va.
3. King and Prince, St. Simon's Island

(Note airfare is not included in the raffle).

It's our way of saying thanks to our clients
and giving them something back for
their support of our efforts to assist
in their renovation efforts.

We are blessed to have some great
clients and we get a kick out of
seeing them have a good time
and getting away from some
pretty hectic careers/jobs
in the Toronto area.

We are happy not to fly in winter
and watch it on the Big Screen
while our clients have a blast
in the spring breezes in West Palm.

Update: An unreal dart on the 17th
playoff hole gets Paddy Harrington the Win !!!

Phenomenal tournament this year...weather
was amazing for our clients, glad they enjoyed
the trip !

Never Underestimate the appeal of a Bright Kitchen

The appeal of a white or bright off-white kitchen
is great for resale maximization, prospective
homeowners want clean, modern detail and
bright surroundings. This is why the oak
kitchen with pecan stain has fallen by the
wayside...no one wants to look at often
mismatched grain, pores and knotholes
covered in varnish clears or nitrocellulose
lacquer that begins to breakdown in accelerated
UV exposure.

Thats the beauty of lacquered and painted kitchens,
once youve sanded, you can have ANY colour
you want ANY time....

Dove White Modernization...

Cabinetry Colour: OC-17 Dove White
Finish: S/G Waterborne Lacquer

Client chose to update from the 12 year old maple
existing - butter pecan stain/clear finish - to a
modern off-white in OC-17 Dove White.

Finished in AcromaPro S/G Lacquer, the world's
best waterborne finish.

All cabinet doors received a thorough off-site
cleaning, sanding and 4 coat process  to provide
a nice long-term duty cycle.

Cabinets were still in very good structural shape
and required a thorough mechanical and hand
sanding to "cut" the varnish and allow surfacer
primer to adhere properly to bare wood.

The sanding was absolutely necessary as
the varnish clear coat was approximately
5-6 mils thick, decayed/sunfaded and we
also detected that they were most likely
washed with either Pine Sol or Murphy's
Oil Soap, two cleaning products which cause
huge pinholing and fisheye issues if not
removed by sanding. Animal fat triglycerides
are the no. 1. cause of poor surface appearance
and adhesion problems for those who
spray cabinetry professionally.

Kickplate and Corner Glass Cabinet insides
were done in a smart black (SW6258 Tricorn).
We try to get clients to get darker accent colours
for kickplates as it is a sharp look and conceals
foot scuffs as opposed to white.

Existing hardware retained in a nickel finish.

Wall colour by client: Vintage Wine (Moore's)

Great thanks to Carlotta and Mike B.

Waterborne Lacquer far superior to Hybrid Paint

I get asked often what is better for cabinet refinishing,
waterborne lacquer or hybrid coatings like ProClassic.

Waterborne lacquers are hands down far superior for
the following reasons:

1. Mar and Stain Resistance
2. Edge Soak Comparison
3. Adhesion
4. Color Stability over Time
5. Speed of Recoat/Touch Up

All 5 categories are used to measure a coatings
effectiveness on a given cabinet door substrate,
whether it is oak, maple, pine or hardboard/osb melamine.

Waterborne lacquers outperform hybrid coatings
in every category and do not yellow over time like
hybrid coatings do (ProClassic/Advance etc.)

Why we sand prior to refinishing....

We sand all refinishing work to remove the following
contaminants:

Cooking residues
Grease
Finger print oils
Crayon marks
Cleaning product residues, especially animal fat
triglycerides
Failed prior varnishes or conversion coatings

All of the above must be removed prior
to refinishing. It is done with both manual
sanding and abrasive mechanical machine
sanding ( We use a Viet S211 for flats and
detail sanders for contour sanding.)

We are quite alarmed when we hear stories of
Kitchen refinishers who don't prep sand and take
Short cuts like using that garbage Kilz or vinyl
toluenated primers. These products do not
meet HAPS or GreenGuard standards and are unsafe
to expose your client's family to. !!!

One day refinishing turnarounds are a bit of
a joke, because it means you got cheated out
of a proper sanding and preparation. If you
doubt this, take a strip of duct tape and apply
it to your cabinet door, press firmly and allow it
to stick for 30 seconds, then quickly remove the tape
by pulling it off quickly....its a standard adhesion
test and will quickly reveal poor surface prep.

We think that companies who try to blow n go
kitchens in a day are a joke and are big-time
cheaters. The only way they are doing this is
they are not sanding or taking doors off site
to be completed in a regulated shop environment.

Not only is Kilz unsafe to use, but it poses
an explosion hazard, especially if sprayed.

Our KCMA approved refinishing is 100% waterborne
and meets all qualifications for a GreenGuard/
HAPS free listing.
We wouldn't have it any other way.

Please ask and demand that any contractor
painting inside your home use Only Greenguard
, Hazardous Air Pollutant Free or Ecologo certified
products.
