Full Wall TV Built -in ...Arctic White

We recently completed a full wall built-in
out of Canadian Maple and finished in
Arctic White w HVLP spray (Satin Sheen).

The best thing about built-ins is you give
up way less floor space, have a nice focal
point for the TV and do away with some
of these particle board cheap TV consoles
you see at the Big Box stores.

Client was blown away by the quality of
the fit and finish...and the price....!

All ls NOT LOST !

Back in the Fall we were given the chance to work
on some fine teakwood paneling on a vintage 1980's
sailboat. What you sometimes see due to the moisture
and condensation is wood that begins to rot from constant
dampness...most of the time teak is quite resistant hence its
use in boat manufacturing.

We power oscillated, stained with Early American
Woodsong Stains and clear coated with 4 mils dft
marine spar varnish, mist coated with an HVLP rig.

The woodwork will now be able to withstand another
20 years of life on the water !

Strip,Refinish and Rebuild

We usually go the extra mile for good clients
and in this case, we felt it was a better solution
to cut, shape and router new drawer fronts
for the existing drawer boxes, rather than
work with the legacy face fronts. We had
these cut, shaped and routered to the same
profile in less than 1 hour. We also stripped
out the old finish from the face frames so
that a nice refinish result is possible.

We were given the challenge of coming
up with a solution for aged but good
condition cabinet doors that had multiple
old coats of alkyd and latex paints...doors
were probably over 40 years old but suprisingly
good shape as they were routed out of solid
maple with a dish profile. As you can
see above the before and after shows the
effectiveness of the new Enviro friendly
strippers from Dumond Chemical...Smart
Strip can take off 10-15 coats of finish within
a 20-30 minute dwell time (covered in plastic)
and is super safe to work with.

Our Spray Shop

Our spray shop features a 625 cfm extraction booth,
1500 sqft2 of space and can finish 2-3 kitchens at
a time. Why mess up your house with sanding dust,
particulates and methylene chloride stripping fumes when
you can get us to uninstall, refinish and re-install !

All waterborne solutions may require longer surface prep
and sanding, however the safety is worth it both for our
clients and the environment.

We DO NOT spray solvent based coatings or hybrid
coatings with any Stoddard Solvent, Benzene or Vinyl
Toluene...these products are OLD technology, the wrong
technology and can ignite. We could not get a fire inspection
certificate if we did spray those coatings as many booths
in the 90's were shut down as they posed significant fire
and explosion hazards.

Booking Information for New Clients

Just a quick note that our calendar of projects is filling up
quickly in the New Year.If you are considering a cabinet
refinishing project we do require minimum 3 weeks lead time
to fit your project in and give our suppliers time to ready
product - and this includes lacquers, cabinet hardware, hinges
and other related items. We cannot "wave a magic wand" and
turn your project around in 3-6 days, nor would we want to
do this disservice to you. Fine finishes require application, check
and sandback and curing time prior to applying hardware so
that if you need to perform a repair your doors are not stuck
firm to your hinges etc. Deposits are required on all confirmed
projects - no exceptions !

Our preferred suppliers are Becker-Acroma, Gemini Lacquer and
Sherwin-Williams. Hardware we choose from Richelieu,
Amerock and Blum from Rockler Woodworking in Buffalo,NY.
You will not find a better woodworking retailer in North
America in terms of service, choice and proximity to the Great
Lakes region.

All in shop finishes are sprayed with AA gun from a low pulsation
Merkur pump, on-site finishes are sprayed with air compressor
and gravity gun.

Projects can be booked online by email colorscapespainting@gmail.com
or calling us at 905-802-6099.

Last Week's Project - MapleGrove Estates Oakville

Last month we had the opportunity to brighten
a once dreary 1970's looking  kitchen - we nest
cut 26 Lexington F -Shaker Cabinet Doors,
refinished the existing face frames and brought
in Granite Transformations from Oakville to drop
in some hot looking new quartz stone countertops.

Finish coats all shot with Merkur low-pulsation
AA gun in Becker Acroma Akvatopp Waterborne
Non-Yellowing Lacquer. (KCMA +5 rating).

Client was on a tight budget as they are staging to
sell and move to the sunny south !

The best thing...our solution price was just under
$3800.00 complete for 26 cabinet doors, refinish work
and we even installed the mid height convection oven.
The client had three other quotes - all of them 15,000 and
above for the same scope of work !

Hardware: Amerock C Pulls from RONA.

WSIB Insurance Now Mandatory for Anyone Painting Residential Homes

The Ontario Government and Federal Canadian Government
have now effectively mandated WSIB coverage for all
residential contracting companies operating in Canada.

If you do not have WSIB coverage, you will face a stiff fine
if caught by one of their inspectors on a jobsite.

We have been covered since 1992 and welcome
any inquiries into our insurance and registration
as a valid Ontario business.

Our Next Project - Knotty Varnished Pine

Our next project includes converting knotty pine
cabinetry to opaque lacquered finish. The cabinetry
is still in great condition 35+ yrs after original install
(Barzotti) which is a testament to the quality of the
installation !

Pics posted for client to see that we have completed
first passes of prime coat and all sanding and vacuuming
of crystallized varnish is complete.

As you can see, our main challenge will be to
properly degloss the existing finish, solvent clean
and finish coat to our high degree specification
of zero holiday, defect free, shoproom finish !

Great thanks to Tammy and Dee W.

Questions about Aged Finishes Yellowing, Trim Paints vs RTS Lacquers

Had a client ask me today if they had to use Sherwin-William's paint
for their home, because of a bad experience they had in the past
with severe yellowing of their trim in their 1980's built home.

The answer is no, however many paint companies used to push
oil-based trim paints until the new advanced acrylics were able
to push them out of the market. The new acrylics are far
superior to the old oil based finishes as they do not yellow
quickly in the absence of sunlight, contain almost zero VOC's
and are very safe to work with in terms of cleanup and odor.

Our company cares about the environment, the safety of our
clients who we work for and making sure the right coating
specification is both communicated and delivered the right
way the first time. We stopped using oil-based finishes in the
late 1990's and are a little bit taken aback when we hear
of someone who wants to use that old technology in their home !

We like to use the new Emerald, ProClassic and Super Paint on all our
trim - we find it covers and levels better than most other products
on the market.

As far as refinishing cabinetry goes, we DO NOT USE HOUSE PAINT
on cabinetry, it is not approved by KCMA and does not have the
cleanability or mar resistance that waterborne lacquer does....visit
a cabinet shop, they are not using architectural trim paints for finger-joint
pine, maple and mdf, it takes far too long to dry, is gummy to the touch and
tends to chip off easily after a few months. Waterborne lacquers are
snap-dry in 10-15 min, sand out beautifully and look far superior
when sprayed properly than any drippy slow dry trim paint.
Ready-to-spray viscosity is a big benefit of today's modern wb lacquers,
open the can, strain and spray....now if we could only figure out a way
to get the cabinetry to sand itself.....!!!

For kitchen cabinets specifically, ROSHIELD 636
emulsion provides its best performance when used in combination
with a waterborne sealer based on RHOPLEX™ AC-337N emulsion.
Each of these polymers is based on acrylic technology recognized for
providing highly durable finishes. This sealer/topcoat combination results
in a low-VOC, low-HAPs, ultra-low-formaldehyde/formaldehyde-free
system with excellent appearance, colour and mar-resistance properties.

Why it pays off to paint before selling your home...

Having navigated my own recent home sale I can tell you
that making sure your home is freshly painted and staged
makes all the difference !

Prospective new homeowners DO NOT want to have
to repaint all the rooms, repaint the trim and address
exterior restorations in addition to the high costs and
taxes associated with a real estate transaction. They
want to be able to move in and maybe make 1 or
2 adjustments in the first year of ownership.

Spending a few thousand dollars to have your
home professionally repainted can add as much
as 7 to 10% to the value of the home. Avoid painting
and you will be discounting your listing to the buyer
for things like:

1. Yellowed ceilings and trim
2. Aged finishes that are hard to clean
3. Tired old colour palette - we have seen homes that haven't seen a
paintbrush in over 20 years (and yes some of them are in East
    Oakville of all places !)
4. Cabinets that are disgusting, dirty, and full of grease and kitchen residues
5. Bathrooms with old plumbing fixtures, corroded connections etc.

A $42,000 increase in the selling price was realized with a relatively
inexpensive repaint (4500.00) of the upper and lower floor of my
own personal home. Had we not painted, we were looking at a
heavily discounted selling price !

Muskoka Project: TV Unit Build and Painting

Whoever said a cottage had to be "rustic" to have
the cottage feel ? Cottage is really just a state of
mind...a few miles of asphalt travel to a place of
serenity and peace away from the demands of
real day to day living....

Well we packed our fishing poles and kayaks
along with our finishing equipment and trekked
north to Port Carling recently...here above
is the result....

We built a small tv cabinet and spray finished
with HVLP process lacquer in SW 6133 Muslin
and added light coffee glazing to detail.
We built and finished the unit on site in 3 days - the
client picked up the hardware at the local RONA.

In the home theatre room we repainted with
6129 Restrained Gold (Sherwin Williams) and
installed a custom Optoma HD Projector
for the golf and hockey enthusiasts :)

It wasn't that difficult ending the project
with deck bbq overlooking Lake Muskoka.

TV Unit Custom Built and Finished On-site : $1200.00
Wall Painting: $850.00
Projector Mounting: $150.00

Our Cabinet Refinishing Process....

Our spray refinishing process is a little complicated
to explain in 1 paragraph, but the results speak for
themselves over old wood grain (1980's golden oak).
Client chose CC-548 Asphalt for the kitchen
island and Cloud White CC-40 (Moore's) for the
main cabinetry. We laid down 4 coats Akvatopp
Semi with 33 psi aircap pressure from a fine finish
gravity gun and sanded between finish coats prior
to final cure on the UV bench. As some clients may
be aware, the new waterborne lacquers are speedily
cured via UV light and are very safe for us applicators
to work with.

And yes, we always remove cabinetry, strip hardware
and spray on the flat. Anyone doing cabinets by
spraying while hung is misinformed and cannot get
the results that we do.

  • No sags, runs or curtains
  • Even film build (only possible on flat spray)
  • Sides receive equal film build
  • Cabinets cure in the proper position

Great thanks to Adam and Julie for the project !

Replacing Kitchen Floor with Click Laminate

Project: Replace 15yr old Armstrong lineoleum
with Mannington Cherry 8mm Click Laminate

Kitchen Floor Size: 150 sq ft (15 x 10)

We estimated about 6 hours to do all cuts and corners
for a seamless floor replacement over 1 layer of old
builder installed linoleum. In our case, this client was
very lucky as the transition from carpet to laminate
was perfectly even, and the soft level layer precluded
the use of any underlayment fibre sheet.

We also found that the newest Laminate Floors have
better click-lock tolerances and fit much better
than some of the others we have used before.

Cost of New Floor:   150.00
Installation Fee:       280.00

Explaining the High-end Approach

On occasion we get asked what our "high-end" approach
to painting and renovating includes. We'll explain it in
bullet point fashion as follows:

  • We provide a full service from estimating to completion
  • We can provide sketches, blueprints and professional mock-ups
  • & demonstrations of any modification or sample (Cabinets, Custom Millwork)
  • We do not use inferior painting materials or hardware
  • We do not provide a $99.00 per room solution (Can anyone ?)
  • Our painter(s) are educated, seasoned and have experience on all construction
  • phases of any given project with all types of substrates - wood, drywall, composites
  • If electrical work is required, we will use a certified and licensed electrician
  • to inspect and complete all work
  • We use the BEST in class paint products and applicators for a professional look
  • We are respectful, non-smoking and get repeat work due to our professionalism
  • If a project takes longer than your expected deadline, we will make sure you
  • are aware of why that is, and why the result is worth waiting for.
  • Trust us, there is a real difference in quality work done by a qualified painting
  • operation vs. a college paycheck outfit who typically quote volume and cut
  • costs wherever possible.
  • We stand behind all of our work with an unrivaled warranty (5 yrs)
  • Whether it is 1 small room or 20, we take the same approach to all projects
  • and will not cut corners or deviate from your expectations.

Home Gym Renovation !

Our client asked us to come up with three things to make his
basement usable:

1. Bright and Clean
2. Wall Mounted LCD Screens for Exercise Bike Programs
(Virtual Reality Bike Course) and to watch GOLF !
3. Berber High Traffic Gym Carpet

We added a 4th requirement which was Greenguard certified carpet
and freshly applied paint from Sherwin Williams ! The children at
this home suffer from allergies to a range of things including latex paint,
and using the new ZERO VOC products eliminates the possibility
of any reaction to the newly applied paint.

Great thanks to Sabrina and Jeff K. for the project !
